Either pay cash or if you must use plastic, use a credit card at the gas pump since it has more consumer protection than a debit card (even those with credit card logos.) It can take weeks to get money back in your bank account in a fraud investigation. Sometimes the bank will give you a temporary credit, but they can take that money back if they cannot prove you were a victim.
It is much easier to get credit charges reversed and your loss is limited to $50 (some credit cards don't put that $50 charge on you.)
