Long term egg storage

Like many people with a few chickens I have too many eggs during the summer and the birds stop laying during the winter.     I've been throwing the extra aggs at my donkeys each day but I found a good way to store eggs for a year without refridgeration.

I've started but because I don't antisipate getting extra eggs for much longer this year before the birds stop laying I used a 2 gallon bucket with 3 quarts of water and 3 ounces of hydrated lime (same thing as the pickling lime you buy at the grocery store).

My donkeys will appreciate my using the extra eggs for a better purpose.

I will if I get enough eggs stored to last a while.

A guy I know has done it for years but he suggested that I rotate the eggs every month to keep the yolk from sticking to the shell.     I'm going to try it without rotating.

I think the VERY FIRST episode of Doomsday Preppers had a lady in Killeen, TX saying you coat eggs in mineral oil and they go 18 months.

Is that not a thing?

Yes, Mineral oil works and so does dipping the eggs in wax.     There is also a chemical that builders add to cement to make it more water proof that works but I don't remember the name and it's expensive compared to hydrated lime.

If you have a few lbs of slaking or hydrated lime (pickling lime) you can store thousands of eggs.
