Thick, stiff, prickly leaves like a mutant holly, but more of a tree than a bush - some have grown 8 ft in ~4 years.

Mahonia, also called Oregon Grape.

Thanks. I remember my parents mentioning the name. They're kind of taking over now, so I was wondering if they were a full-on weed. I've got to get rid of dozens at least. I'll study on transplanting them on to my property.

If I recall correctly, the berries are edible and the root is yellow(ish) and medicinal in nature. I've heard it referred to as pleurisy root plant out west. Not sure how the root is used. They were very easy to grow. Should be transplantable but take care not to shock it too much. They do make a good barrier but not as effective as say holly or black locust.
