Is the recommended wheat source, winter wheat?, summer wheat /(I am assuming berries, here).  Is this for already ground wheat?  We had a grinder for Y-2k that we converted to be used by hand with a wheel.  All those wonderful things are long gone, so we are starting over on many.  While we have long term wheat berries, we do not have 50 lbs.  I can use the grinder that comes with my vitimix,, but that counts on electricity.  Our solar will keep two freezers going, along with a few other household appliances. I know wheat berries will hold up much longer and will taste better
Along with paper plates. I like the cooking bags, for keeping things cleaner.  There will be so much to do, that one less mess once in awhile could be very nice.

Of course, wheat berries will last the longest, if you have a way to grind them.

Back when I got my manual grinder I researched the red & white, winter and summer.  IIRC, generally winter is hard and summer is soft.  Summer is slightly better for pastries, winter better for breads -  but unless you are professional bakery chef you're unlikely to notice the difference.   And the hard lasts better than summer even when both are stored properly.   The terms are slightly misleading as both berries are physically hard.  IIRC, hard or soft refers to the 'hand' of the wheat when ground and cooked.

Except for a few Honeyville purchases, most of my wheat berry storage is winter red.

Hope that helps.

We have added more dried beans to the larder,  along with some Ramen soup, and some other comfort foods.  Also found  a BOGO on 15 bean soup mix, so bought two and added two canned hams to add in to that mix. Still trying to maintain our goal of 6 months worth of food stocks, and have managed it well. Need to find a deal on dry cat food, our stock on that is coming up on it date... need to rotate that so we don't have angry kitties attacking us ...LOL.

In this category, one thing I found helpful was to use a long bread basket, in which to store packets of things like Hidden Valley Ranch dressing, gravies, in alphabetical order and oldest expiration date first, taco seasoning...anything you like.  Mine starts with aujus, because I like to throw in some jalapeño peppers, top a beef roast with the combination and cook it in my solar over, in the good ole Georgia summer.  I just refreshed my last week to include some biscuit and gravy mix and more beef, chicken and pork gravies. The basket is full and I feel better.  Variety is really this spice of life!  During stressful times, a few quick and easy, is a beautiful thing!  And, yes, I can make most of this stuff from scratch, but after a day in the garden, and cleaning the chicken coop, easy is better!

I have a small red plastic crate, and I can't remember where it came from, it's about 4x6 as wide as a pack of muffin mix. They all fit nicely in there I can really pack them in. Having them there keeps the cupboard organized.
