If it didn't get so cold there

But it does, and if you need medical care in a hurry, where do you go?  I totally understand the desire.  Montana is beautiful.  We have ridden in the mountains outside of Cody, about thirty minutes.  Of course there are two seasons, winter and construction....all roads are torn up during the brief period when you can get out.  Of course the bear scat has little bells in it carried by former tourists.....a local joke. Gotta love the area and the idea of living there....nice roaring  fires....snow... safety...

It's been bugging me. How often do people go out? With that population base, it seems like the place would be empty as often as not.
A strong conviction that something must be done is the parent of many bad measures.

Apparently it's the only place in almost 100 miles to congregate, so that's where birthday parties, graduation parties, wedding parties, etc are held along with "eating out".  It supposedly also gets a lot of traffic from tourists.

Bounty Hunter, they say the bean soup is worth the trip, so you'll have to let us know if that's true.

Whoops, you said Montana and my old brain went back to Wyoming.  Well, cold is cold.  My dad, from WI. and IA.  used to hunt in Montana.  It was even cold there to him, and WI. sets the bar pretty high for cold tolerance.  Yes, it is dryer, just like CO. cold.
So few safe places left to go, where you can get to medical and feel safe at the same time.

The bucking bronco on the bar's sign looks very much like the one on Wyoming license plates as I have on my profile.

Wyo. is not as cold as parts of the Canadian border states, but the wind down the mountains is  always driving the windchill down along with the temperature inversions in the mountain valleys.

This establishment should be a cashflow cow.  Being able to get drinks,  coffee , or a meal in the "wilderness" areas is priceless for locals and visitors especially in the winter.  But it would mean long hours since the local population is so low to hire from.

Another gunmaker, Stag Arms just relocated to Wyoming last month from Connecticut in addition to Weatherby going to Sheridan last year.  Stag had been looking around in the wake of events and laws passed after Sandy Hook.

As far as getting to medical -you need friends or family in a mutual aid relationship who can call for helicopter transport in an emergency or they load you in their 4 wheel drive to take you.  I have driven icy unplowed roads taking folks to the hospital in Jackson Hole if it required more than our clinic 20 miles away could handle many times.  Now there is a better small hospital with out of town specialists who "see" you via Skype to go over blood, ultrasound or radiology tests.

All these new developments make living in areas like these more doable.  Just before we left Ellijay, Ga., or Dr. in Jasper, was hooking up with specialists in Atlanta, making that trip more unnecessary.
Elliot Coleman, has written a highly rated book: The New Organic Grower's Four-Season Harvest.  He is way out East in Harborside, Maine and has gardened all over the country.  He has lots of low-tech ideas.  Thor and I are trying some on a low scale this winter.  Those considering going North, may want to take a look at this book.  While you can store all kinds of food, there is nothing like fresh!
