Local/Regional/National ARES-Red Cross Exercise Set for May 30: Locally-organized ARES exercises in 28 states across the country will simulate emergency conditions and commercial power interruptions, while working with their local Red Cross chapters to handle shelter message traffic. The messages will be entered into the Winlink (or fldigi) system in the ARC-213 message format. CDC COVID-19 protocols will be observed. Designated regional or state message hubs across the country will then receive the messages from the local nets and pass them to a simulated Red Cross national authority, via the Winlink email system. As of yesterday, May 19, the number of expected participants was over two hundred, indicating the scale of this exercise.-- Point of contact is Mike Walters, W8ZY, ARRL Connecticut Section Emergency Coordinator

We participated here in Houston County. Our county does not have any designated ARC shelters so we used 5 high schools that have been identified in the past as potential sites along with the site of the new EOC which has not yet been completed. Each station at the high schools called all five repeaters in the county, then the EOC (under construction) location via simplex, and then each other via simplex using both mobile stations and portables. It was a simple exercise but proved that we can indeed communicate across the county when needed in a variety of ways. We even had several impromptu stations participate when they heard us on the air.

Due to the virus we couldn't use the EOC in Sandy Springs this time but did use last November and made in it with no problems. Since  North Fulton is so spread out we used the spot  in the area. We called Net Control then sent digital messages to Net Control. Then we split into smaller groups and moved over to the simplex frequencies and did it all over again. Net Control compiled all the reports we sent than sent them to a relay station who used WinLink to send them to the Red Cross through and out of state station. Pretty involved but it worked.
