Title: Food Storage Weekly Challenge
Post by: tlwagg on September 13, 2015, 11:42:54 AM
I originally posted this under September is National Preparedness Month on September 01. Since some of you might not have read it and didn't know what was in the post I am changing the heading and moving it to the Food and Water section.

September is National Preparedness Month so I thought I'd start it off by reviving the Food Storage Weekly Challenge. For all of you out there thinking you don't know where to start this will help you. Using this system at the end of a year you will end up with:

300 lbs. wheat—–need 600 lbs.–includes rolled oats, pasta,
12 lbs. pasta
50 lbs. rice
50 lbs. flour
10 lbs. rolled oats
100 lbs. sugar—-need 120 lbs. –includes honey, brown sugar
10 lbs. honey
6 lbs. brown sugar
20 lbs. powdered milk—-need 150 lbs.
12 cans evaporated milk—
3 lbs. shortening—- need 70 lbs.
3 lb. oil
2 qt. mayonnaise
5 lbs. peanut butter
2 qt. mayonnaise
5 lbs. peanut butter
24 cans of tuna fish—-need 40 lbs. of meats
20 lbs. beans—need 190 lbs of legumes
1 lb. yeast
1 lb. baking soda
1 lb. baking powder
12 lbs. salt
2 bottles vitamins
1 bottle of aspirin
11 cans cream of mushroom soup
20 cans of cream of chicken soup
40 cans of tomato soup
21 boxes macaroni and cheese

This system is designed with two people in mind so adjust it accordingly. There is also nothing saying you have to stick to it exactly. If you don't like tomato soup substitute something else.

Week 36 – 7 boxes macaroni and cheese

Remember this is for 2 people so adjust according to your needs.

I am so gonna do this, I have used a lot of my storage and really need to replenish things! I hope I have time to do this! I don't like macaroni and cheese; any suggestions to replace this grain item? Spaghetti maybe?
Are we starting here or are other back weeks posted elsewhere?  Never mind, I found the original post. Thanks so much for doing this Tlwagg!!

Ravenwood have you thought about substituting a flavored rice. It's not mac and cheese and would give you some variety. Or maybe mixing up something like this:

3 cups of rice
6 teaspoons chicken bouillon granules
1/4 cup dried parsley flakes
2 teaspoons onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme

My son eats oats like you wouldn't believe. I got tired of opening my #10 cans and bought him a 15 lbs bag, then he left for Taiwan. He'll be home soon so he'll eat them.

Thank you for posting these.  I have printed the full 12 lists from the website and I am playing catch up for January through March. :-)

One of the things I see posted on the website http://preparedldsfamily.blogspot.com/p/12-monthly-food-storage-lists.html.  is a recommendation to collect recipes that you can use with the food from the list.  Has anyone collected recipes already?  I think that could be a useful addition to the food list.

Thanks

We've been canning for 3 weekends in a row. Lots of Apple based stuff since we have several apple trees, Apple butter, apple jam, 16 quarts pie filling, chow-chow, Apple Ginger Chutney, 10 gallons Hard Cider, red cabbage and apple relish, jalapeno and apple relish, Regular Apple Barbeque sauce and Chipotle Apple Barbeque Sauce. Also have done a couple dozen jars of Italian style stewed tomatoes (add jalapenos , green peppers, onions, bans and chili powder you got chili), some tomato preserves (great on English muffins with peanut butter) and some zesty bread and butter zucchini and squash pickles. Also about 2 dozen jars of Bread and butter pickles. We reuse jars each year and use everything from the garden as well as from local produce stands.

So other than the labor, the above was less than $200 (for replacement and new jars, vinegar, sugar, spices and local produce) Plus gives me time with my oldest daughter (no, I am not teaching her, she is teaching me!) Still going to do some pickled crab apples and some more zesty Bread and Butter Zucchini and Squash pickles. We also sell some of our extra at a local farmers market. Helps defer some of the additional costs.

If I get a couple of deer this year I plan on canning some of the meat, will definitely do that if I get a wild hog.

I don't like rabbit meat as well as chicken, beef, or fish, but I'd get more and more grateful for rabbit meat as I got more and more hungry. My daddy kept rabbits for meat when I was growing up and mom would fry it. A lot of our family, friends, and neighbors did too. Rabbit hutches aren't difficult to build and you get garden fertilizer too. A meat solution if all else follows Murphy's Law.

"Plan Rabbit" illustrates the government's extreme measures to alleviate food shortages in Venezuela. Rabbit is not a commonly eaten item in the South American nation, where Bernal conceded that it's mostly viewed as a cute pet.
The agriculture minister argued that rabbits easily reproduce and are a source of protein. He also recommended citizens consider raising and growing other animals and vegetables at home.

Venezeula's Diet Plan
A national poll published earlier this year found that Venezuelans lost 19 pounds on average in 2016 due to food shortages. Venezuelans line up for hours outside supermarkets, waiting to buy the most basic items.

Ravenwood
Try substituting some pasta and Alfredo sauce.  I got my Alfredo sauce powdered in a can for long term storage.  I also got baking stuff, eggs, powdered milk, shortning & flour so that we could bake some.  My food source (3 vegetable gardens) can then be enhanced.

I just recently found out that SWISS MISS Indulgent Collection Hot Chocolate is 99.9% caffeine free.   I know that doesn't sound like too much of a big deal, but for those that are caffeine sensitive or a cardiac patient, this is a good thing to hide in your comfort stash.   I bought two boxes … 8 envelopes each and stuck them in the larder.  for what its worth, PUBLIX grocery store runs them as part of the regular BOGO program just like all the others... be sure to look at the top of the box to make sure that you get the caffeine free ones!

Don't forget to buy a good manual can opener. Walmart and Publix sell a good quality one that is made in America https://www.walmart.com/ip/EZ-DUZ-IT-3028-Deluxe-Can-Opener-with-Grips-Black/45777327 (https://www.walmart.com/ip/EZ-DUZ-IT-3028-Deluxe-Can-Opener-with-Grips-Black/45777327). Don't buy a cheap one it won't last if your using it everyday. I'm using the same one we bought in 1984, but bought a second one just in case. For older people or people with arthritis you might consider a wall mounted model it takes very little effort to use https://www.lehmans.com/product/wall-mounted-can-opener/ (https://www.lehmans.com/product/wall-mounted-can-opener/) .

We got a Pampered Chef one some 20+ years ago and it still works great. Got it when the kids were small because it is the "Safe Edge" smooth cut design. I have opened thousands of cans of all sizes... even #10 and it still works great. they don't make the exact model any longer but this is their newest version and if it is worthy of the name, It's Great!

Today was a trip to the big city.  Got my car serviced.  It has been over a year since the oil has been changed.  Then again the engine does not usually run much, it's mostly the electric motor.  But I had a tire problem.  It needed air two or more times a week.  They found the nail and patched it.
Went by the HUGE Kroger store so we stopped.  Told the wife I wanted to check the price on rice & pasta.  I got a 5lb bag of rice for $2 + change.  Pasta I got 6ea 16oz boxes for 49cents a box.  You had to buy 6 to get that price.  So now I am vacuum sealing in wide mouth jars.  If I am going to store spare jars, the might as well be full.  Now I have 9 more jars of pasta and 3 of rice.
Well is is not flour, but it will have to do.  No more room for more flour.  I guess it will have to do.  My instructions are NOT to tear down my barn and build a bigger one.

Walmart is out of stock on the he EZ Duz It can opener, but you can pick them at most Publix stores for a similar price (mine was a little cheaper and has red handles instead of black.)  It is my back up for my old Swingaway from the 80s.  The Chinese bought and ruined thst brand.  There ought to be a law!  :)

My wife likes to shop sales, especially at the grocery store.  She came home from the grocery store this morning with 5ea 5lb bags of flour.  They were on sale $2.00 per 5lb bag.  She also came home with 6ea containers of cool whip.  They were buy one get one free.  She makes a lot of blueberry delight! and other deserts with cool whip.  She is quickly filling that new freezer.

She does not like it when I buy from the prepper long term food storage places.  Says she can get it a lot cheaper.....You just have to be patient and shop the sales.

Is the recommended wheat source, winter wheat?, summer wheat /(I am assuming berries, here).  Is this for already ground wheat?  We had a grinder for Y-2k that we converted to be used by hand with a wheel.  All those wonderful things are long gone, so we are starting over on many.  While we have long term wheat berries, we do not have 50 lbs.  I can use the grinder that comes with my vitimix,, but that counts on electricity.  Our solar will keep two freezers going, along with a few other household appliances. I know wheat berries will hold up much longer and will taste better
Along with paper plates. I like the cooking bags, for keeping things cleaner.  There will be so much to do, that one less mess once in awhile could be very nice.

Of course, wheat berries will last the longest, if you have a way to grind them.
Title: Re: Food Storage Weekly Challenge
Post by: Starlady on May 09, 2020, 09:42:31 PM
Back when I got my manual grinder I researched the red & white, winter and summer.  IIRC, generally winter is hard and summer is soft.  Summer is slightly better for pastries, winter better for breads -  but unless you are professional bakery chef you're unlikely to notice the difference.   And the hard lasts better than summer even when both are stored properly.   The terms are slightly misleading as both berries are physically hard.  IIRC, hard or soft refers to the 'hand' of the wheat when ground and cooked.

Except for a few Honeyville purchases, most of my wheat berry storage is winter red.

Hope that helps.

We have added more dried beans to the larder,  along with some Ramen soup, and some other comfort foods.  Also found  a BOGO on 15 bean soup mix, so bought two and added two canned hams to add in to that mix. Still trying to maintain our goal of 6 months worth of food stocks, and have managed it well. Need to find a deal on dry cat food, our stock on that is coming up on it date... need to rotate that so we don't have angry kitties attacking us ...LOL.

In this category, one thing I found helpful was to use a long bread basket, in which to store packets of things like Hidden Valley Ranch dressing, gravies, in alphabetical order and oldest expiration date first, taco seasoning...anything you like.  Mine starts with aujus, because I like to throw in some jalapeño peppers, top a beef roast with the combination and cook it in my solar over, in the good ole Georgia summer.  I just refreshed my last week to include some biscuit and gravy mix and more beef, chicken and pork gravies. The basket is full and I feel better.  Variety is really this spice of life!  During stressful times, a few quick and easy, is a beautiful thing!  And, yes, I can make most of this stuff from scratch, but after a day in the garden, and cleaning the chicken coop, easy is better!

I bought some cans of canned clams this week, with an expiration date of Jan.2024. If you store potatoes, or have lots of canned potatoes (won't be as good), clam chowder is only a step away.  You can use your chives, which are around all year, garlic, onion and throw in a dab or butter from your freezer. I used a pound of butter that I intentionally left in the freezer for 18 months.  It was just fine.  If you fill that little basket that hangs in your chest freezer, with pounds of butter, you can store a years worth.  Life without butter just isn't worth living... :)
We also like polar brand smoked salmon, great of crackers for cocktail hour... Anchovies stack in a small spot with your canned goods (don't groan, some of us like them).  A years worth talk us very little space.  Besides pizza, they are great in your homemade pasta sauce.  You won't know they are there, but they add something.  I got the idea from an award winning Italian Restaurant.

We are holding at 20 weeks worth right now.... We are adding as we rotate some items.  We had a can of pineapples explode in the larder... what a mess.  Added in some packages of wild rice, (as an add in), got a deal on papertowels.  having problems with the garden this year... got the area cleaned up... but running behind getting everything growing.  Plants just don't want to cooperate!

Another good storage item, along with foil and cling wrap type stuff, is a good supply of cupcake liners.  I have gone through 60 0f them in about two months.  This time of year, I make lots of muffins, using blueberries and over ripe bananas.  If you store cupcake mix, for a quick treat and don't can't to cook from scratch, these help.  With so much to do, I don't want to take the time to clean out the entire cupcake tin, just the top.  You can also make little breakfast baked egg dishes in them.
Viet Nam is going to be keeping most of their rice, due to weather issues this year.  This is according to the ice age farmer.  Prices will of course go up if this happens and we will have shortages. Wild rice has been harder to find recently.  I always try to replace what I use.  Wild rice has been on my grocery list for two months now.
I like Rice Select, Royal Blend.  It is a mixture.  I cook it with different broths for variety.  Have not seen it lately.

We have finished the first of 2 ea 25 lb bag of sugar.  The wife told me Wallyworld still had the 25 lb bags and wanted to know if she should replace it.  I said not now as canning season for up is on the wind down and we will be using less for the next 6 months.  Watching current events may make me revisit that decision !

I always replace what I use. I have my food storage in the basement in cans but buy what I need and replace it as soon as I open the bag. It isn't going to get any cheaper than it is today. I haven't seen any prices going down lately.

Twagg, Thank you for doing this every week!
On the clothes pins...The Amish make a wooden clothes pin.  They are expensive, around  $22.00 per dozen.  I have used them for three years and have never broken one.  If you break it, send it back and they replace it.  They do an extra good job of holding fabric to the line in the wind.
Remember, Chicago was seeing a shortage on peanut butter.  Maybe it is the storage that the government is doing, who knows?  I have some heirloom  seed peanuts, in the fridge, just in case.  Wish we had planted them last year.  I was voted down.  Maybe a good thing, because making homemade peanut butter this year might have finished me off... Has anyone grown them here?  I know their are boiled peanuts all over the place, but what about the northern area of group?

With holiday baking, remember your muffin liners.  When we do have power and can use our ovens that are electric (if we are unlucky enough to have one of these), we  will have easy clean up.  Foils and cooking bags also come in handy when you have so much to do, or you are on alert.  This is a good time to watch for sales on all those things.
T. glad your power is back on before the  coldest night of the week!

Thanks Tlwagg!  This is an important service and reminder.  I hope everyone checks the supplies noted each month.  You don't want any surprises.  Since baking is mentioned this month, I wanted to note that yeast was impossible to get during the last lockdown, once things got serious and people were working from home.  If will keep in your freezer for a long time, esp. if you get it in bulk, instead of the little packets.. I hear that cranberry sauce or cranberries may be in short supply soon, just a rumor from a good source.  If you can you may want to grab some fresh and start in.  They should go on sale after Thanksgiving, if still available.  First off, you have to like them.  Store what you eat, eat what you store.

From what we have determined, the Insta-pot will cook the quickest with the least energy.  We have watched demos of pots being used with batteries charged with a portable solar system.  If it is storming, a charged battery or gas stove may be your only choices.  I like the Smooch rocket stove and American solar ovens, but they can only be used under the best of conditions and take time.  We have an open air covered area, and I suppose you could use your rocket stove on a porch if it is portable.
Anyone have a better idea for cooking indoors?  We did buy a camp stove with the butane.
Heads up on canning flats.  While I was placing an on line order with Walmart, I Checked out canning lids (flats).  They were 12.95 a dozen. Not long ago (last year) you could get the jar, ring and flat for that price!  Be Leary of the lids on Amazon. I bought some last year and they just don't appear to be as good.  They were under Ball lids, but I don't think they really are.  They sold in bulk, like 32.

I am trying,, BUT, Below is the e-mail I got today.

 Pleasant Hill Grain Company

Your Conventional Hard Red Wheat Order
Dear xxxx,

This is an update about the Conventional Hard Red Wheat you have on backorder with Pleasant Hill Grain.
Estimated Time of Arrival
Our supplier is working hard to increase production and ship orders to their distributors just as fast as possible, but due to the extreme demand they’re experiencing and Covid-related supply disruptions, shipments to distributors have been delayed.

The estimated time of arrival (ETA) for your Conventional Hard Red Wheat to arrive at our facility is now September 30. We'll process your order ASAP once the shipment arrives, and we'll update you if there are any changes to the ETA.

Please remember, "ETA" stands for "estimated time of arrival" and this is the date that we anticipate the product will arrive at our facility.

As a reminder, you have not been charged for this preorder. Pleasant Hill Grain does not bill your account for preordered product until the product is in stock.
Processing Your Order
Once the shipment arrives at our facility it will take a few days to process your order. Once you see payment post to your account, your product should ship within 2 business days. We send a tracking number once your item ships.
Checking Order Status
If you have additional products on backorder you'll receive an update about those products in separate emails. Please watch your inbox for those updates through the next couple of weeks, and whitelist our email address info@4phg.com so our emails don't go to your Junk folder.

One of our very highest priorities is getting your items to you without a moment’s delay. Every day we do everything possible to expedite shipments from suppliers. We'll answer every question as best we can, and the fewer order-status requests we get, the more time we’ll have for actually getting your goods to you. Thank you for understanding the difficult challenges we face—we’re doing our best, for you.
Contacting Us
If you need to contact us, EMAIL is better than phone, and if you have questions about your order please check our FAQ page before contacting us.

R.W.S.  Good thing you got a price locked in.
Tomato prices for canned and fresh are going to go up around 33%, according to interviews with growers in the states.  One third is a real chuck of change, so grow all you can.  The growers claim they will only be getting five cents a pound profit.  At that rate, they may be growing other crops soon.  This increase has many causes: drought, wild fires, field worker shortages and of course the cost of fuel.  Too late in most areas to start plants if you have not already done so, but you can get extra seeds to put back.  If you grow to make sauce and ketchup along with just canning, watch for sugar sales!
Glad to see this food storage revised.  Not everyone will want everything on the list, but I for one check and recheck when it is posted.
