Title: 2018 Annual Fall SEPN Fall Campout - October 5-7 @ Cedar Creek WMA
Post by: Lilburner on August 12, 2018, 08:44:47 PM
It's that time again! Mark your calendar!

The Annual Fall Campout - October 5-7 at Cedar Creek WMA. If you wish to arrive on Thursday the 4th, you'll have plenty of company for the extra day. If you can't can't camp with us, come down for the day. Most planned activities will be concentrated on Saturday.

Cedar Creek is located south of Monticello on GA Hwy 212. Our camp site is across from the Check Station (N 30* 13' 45.1 W 83* 31' 36.1) on Checking Station Road. If Googling, google Cedar Creek Check Station or you might get directions to the range which is a different road off 212.

Specifically, here: https://goo.gl/maps/jKXeHv1JbKm The campground is on the opposite side of the gravel road from the Checking Station on the map, and just a hair BEFORE it. The path into the woods is subtle and some would say hard to see, but accommodates the largest of RVs. If you drive fully up TO the Checking Station, you've gone too far. HOPEFULLY there will be a yellow banner out by Thursday afternoon marking the turn.

Watch this thread for more details. As classes, activities, etc. are added, the details will be added to this main post as well.

A quick overview of this years classes and activities, all scheduled for Saturday. 10/6

11:00 - Cast Iron: Care, maintenance, seasoning, etc - by Starlady

13:00 - Home Wine making: Presented by YellowRose (with samples!)

16:00 - Solar: including whole house solar, by John Galt 1 (I was fortunate enough to have been able to tour his home system and it's quite impressive)

19:00 - Auction! If you've been to our campouts before, you know all about this. It's our only fundraiser and it keeps us in the important stuff like internet and toilets. If you're not familiar - bring a donation or two or ten and we'll auction it/them off. And you might pick up a bargain while you're at it.

All day: HF Amateur Radio Hands-on Demo: Get on the air! A good friend and President of a local Amateur radio club will be acting as "Control Station" meaning even unlicensed people can get on the air and learn, and if the conditions are right - who knows? Maybe talk around the world!

Watch this space and this thread for more details!

OK! A few changes. some a long time coming, but I get so hammered, and usually away from home and computer - just catching up some.

Looks like Yellowrose has volunteered to do winemaking. We had some criticism last year of too much stuff, and I'll probably still be going 100 mph by the campout, so lets's scrap thee airgun shoot. I've still got a youth air rifle to give away. If one youth comes, it's theirs. If more than one come, I'm sure we can do an impromptu shootout or drawing or something.

The other thing people complained about was doing things every two hours, so lets make it three - 10,1, and 4 with auction at seven.

Someone requested the solar be as late as possible, so if JohnGalt1 is amenable, we can do that at four, leaving 10 and 1. If Starlady has a preference, we'll let her pick due to seniority. Discuss below.

Anything else?

Looking forward to seeing everyone and relaxing a little!

If it helps, the cast iron class probably won't be more than 30 minutes or so.

I would prefer the 1:00 slot.  I will probably give out samples from last year's batch, but not if that means handing out alcohol at 10:00 am.

Four for solar will be fine.

OK - how about this.

since Starlady has a short presentation, we move her to 11 so we don't all have to be up at the crack of ten. Yellowrose at 1 for after lunch drinking, and John Galt at 4.

Sound like a plan?

The main tweet has been updated with classes and schedules, and important information about finding the campsite if you're a first timer, thusly...

As some of you may know I'm giving a presentation on solar power.

Does anybody have a question that they want addressed such as how to wire the panels or battery sizing.       I'm trying to keep the presentation to the point but informative but I've seen so many people buy panels and not get well matched equipment for the rest of the system.

Please consider your electrical needs before buying anything.      example...   My fridge is something I want running if the grid is down and requires 1.25 kwhs a day so a 700 watt inverter can run it after the compressor is running but... it requires a huge start up surge to get the compressor started so to start that fridge requires an inverter that can handle a 2000 watt surge for a second while the motor starts up..

Generally something with an electric motor (huge starting surge) is what defines how large of an inverter you need.       For some of us the "defining load" is the well pump.      A 1 hp well pump requires about 1300 watts to run but for the first 1/2 second the well pump needs about 4000 watts to start.

A bit more detail at the class would be good....like, how do I know if an inverter can handle a surge like the examples you gave?  I didn't see any info on that on my inverter boxes.

Good,     I was debating about bringing up inverter surge capacities, I think it's an important topic.

I bought a high quality 1000 watt inverter from Sammex years ago that I thought could rum my full sized fridge in an emergency.      While the inverter has produced clean PSW power for about 6 years now it's surge capacity was so small it can't run that refrigerator.

Most 1000 watt inverters can handle a 1700 watt surge but mine can only handle a 1200 watt surge so the fridge won't start.

Question on potential auction item.  USNEA

More branches came down in last night's storm and between what I collected last month and what I can get now, I can probably stuff 3-4 quart size plastic bags.  The retail value would be somewhere between $10-20.  Each bag would be more than plenty to make 15-20 small travel size jars (about 1" high by 1.25" diameter) for salves,  PLUS a pint sized tincture for bronchial/lung issues.  One of those small salve jars has lasted me since late January and I use it every week (scratches, mosquito bite itch relief, etc.)

But I don't want to go through all the work this week if there is no interest in it.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

One request: Please bring firewood!

Bring a share for me too, please. The place I always get it at the last minute crapped out this year. If I see any on the way, I'll grab some, but I'm not counting on it.

I'll try to bring some wood when I come down Saturday.

I've got a almost new Sun Oven I'm bringing down for the auction.      It's only been used a few times so bring your money for the auction.

I've never camped in a WMA.      I'm assuming I can just bring some cash and pay as I drive in.

Back home safe after a GREAT, although extremely HOT campout.  The classes were soooooooooooo good and informative - can't wait to put together a small solar setup for my camper and start that blackberry wine!  Thanks so much to the other two presenters, to everyone who brought stuff for another profitable auction run by our official auctioneer stvr -whose prancing around was hilarious.  Biggest thanks,  as usual, to Lilburner for all the work setting it up.

It was so nice to meet up with old and new friends again, too many to count but we had a great turnout, 11 camper/tenters and at least as many day trippers.

Did I say how much I love my 10"   02 Cool fans?  8 D cell batteries, 3 full nights on low.  I'd have left on Friday morning it was so hot.

Thanks to everyone who came out! It was great to see everyone. Always super happy to have first-timers in addition to seeing old friends.

Thank you to Starlady, Yellow Rose and John Galt 1 for their respective presentations. Our auctions are really sustaining us and beyond - we were even able to give the presenters gift cards this year as a token of appreciation for their time and efforts - a tradition we hope to be able to continue.

Also thanks to smithrm1 and another local friend for setting up an HF radio station that got people on the air - many for the first time - some even were able to talk without their own license. It's important to keep up HF radio awareness and interest if we ever want to stay in contact during any significant SHTF.

Speaking of the auction - we made $800 this year! We've had some big successes here - I don't know if anyone noticed, but no one asked you to go in on the Porta-Potties this year. The website is fully paid and possibly improving in capability, and we're looking at other ideas to keep giving back, so keep up the generosity, and keep those auctions in mind throughout the year as you encounter items that can help out!

As far as preps go, I learned one - don't drive a trailer without a jack especially for the trailer. Fortunately I learned this while leveling and not because of a flat or worse. Your vehicle jack may be useless. The more you know.

Thanks again to everyone for coming out!

Starlady is right, it was the hottest campout I remember going to! But we had a great time! I haven't posted much lately as other things have occupied my time so not current on all the forum names of the new friends we have made but you know us and our big ole Taj-Ma-Haul :)

We enjoyed really spending time getting to know new friends and reconnected as always with our SEPREP family, for that's what many of you are to us is family.

Stvr was in great form for the auction and the classes this year were just awesome!

We are already looking forward to seeing you all again soon. We will also try to be a bit more active here and catching up with all of you more often.

And a big thanks to Lilburner for all you do for us!!!!!

Another year and another great campout. Like everyone else, I agree that it was way too HOT. But the classes were great and the camaraderie was awesome! I am not the most gregarious person around, but I really enjoyed getting to know old friends better and making new acquaintances as much as anything else. There is a huge talent pool within this group.

As always, I learned several new things and was able to talk with others who are much more knowledgeable and experienced in subjects that I am interested in. I would really prefer to learn the “right” way to do things first rather than make the same mistakes others have as I learn.

Thanks to Lilburner for all the work setting it up.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the next campout.

Thanks to Lilburner for putting together the campout.  Even though I was only able to day trip it, I had a great time.  It was good to see some of you that I met this spring, and others that I met for the first time.  It was a privilege to be able to teach one of the sessions.  Thank you to John Galt for the solar presentation.  Starlady, I was very sad that I didn't get there in time for yours.  I hope to see everyone again at the next one.

We had a great time at the camp-out. Lots of good friends and informative classes. Starlady's cast iron class had a few things that I hadn't heard before. The wine making class by Yellow Rose is something we had thought about but hubby likes beer better so he makes that. John Galt 1 and his solar presentation went over my head but now I have more research to do so I can catch up.

I enjoyed the ham radio set up and would like to thank you smithrm1 and everyone involved. I've had my general for 9 months and made my first HF contact Saturday. With our new antenna I hope to change that.

I came down with something Saturday night and had to leave early. I would like to thank everyone for helping us pack up so hubby could take me home. After about twenty hours of sleep and some Advil I'm feeling a lot better. I'd like to thank florida44 and family for bring buy our tent and table today. All of you guys were great thank you.

Running late posting how very happy I was to get away early from the SET activity and come to camp!!!!! It was so good to see members of our 'family' that I had not seen in two years or more. The time went by way too fast. The classes I got to listen in on were great! I might investigate making mead one of these days, ha ha. And John Galt 1 made a hard to fathom topic of solar energy much clearer to me. The antenna the Ham had for his demo seems like it might be the answer for a portable HF antenna for me. I have needed something that "I" can manage on my own without any help and this may be the answer.

Hubby has had something like a bad head cold since Monday and is at the doctors for it now. I started to come down with a lot of drainage this morning. So I must be getting whatever he's got.
