Title: A Coming Pandemic? What will you need to stock up on?
Post by: tlwagg on January 27, 2020, 04:16:29 PM
A Coming Pandemic? What will you need to stock up on?

Pain relievers, cough and cold medicine, stomach medicine, including anti-diarrhea, vitamins, soap, sanitizer, bleach, cleaners, toilet paper, paper towels, Kleenex, Prescription medication, Gatorade, trash bags, rubber gloves, mask, plastic sheeting, duct tape. For babies diapers, and Pedialyte and and Pedialyte frozen pop are good. If you don't have something like a Tyvek suit you can use trash bags to cover your clothes.

This is a good place to start. There is so much more

While I was out and about today I checked on some of the items listed above, I've been hearing they are all sold out. I found everything on the list I looked for. I don't think anyone here is worried yet. Now if I could only find the wire cutters I wanted I'd be happy.

I took your list and made a run on the drug store, grocery store and quickie store.  I am planning another trip in the morning when I finish the new list I am making up now.

As I was leaving the drug store, I told the clerk that she had her first pandemic customer for the day.  Her reply was priceless.  "What's a pandemic"/.

The hardware store is a good place to find them. Most people don't think to look there. At Wal-Mart they have them in both the hardware and paint sections. We use them for various things around the house.

bought lysol multi surface clean and fresh today.  kills 99.9% of germs.  I called the company number on the back and gave them the "s" number.  According to the man on the other end, it will be effective until July of '23.  Same for Lysol wipes and Pledge antibacterial multi surface cleaner.  If the question that I asked was actually answered correctly, this would make these products more effective than bleach, which starts to break down in 6 months.  Poor shock can work, like forever, but not the Walmart stuff.  Check out Gaye Levy's information for more on that.
These are good things to know and have just to deal with the current flu here. We may know more on the Coronavirus soon, if they keep bringing people back here and checking them with a Q-tip up their noses.

Just received a really good thought, from a good friend of mine.  She is a cancer surviver and has to be extra careful about germs.  I had never thought of this but one area she was warned about was the produce section of the grocery store.  Everyone handles the veggies, puts one down, checks out another....this continues.  Vegetables that are not bagged, really hold onto germs from hands.  They almost act like our skin.  Food for thought.
I did wear a mask and washable gloves to shop and be out of the store by 8:00 a.m. yesterday.  Thinking about the garden variety flu, and Corona virus, since we don't really know where it is and is not right now.  Atlanta airport...case in point.  Virus is now in Milan Italy and Germany, growing fast.  No I do not have my tinfoil hat ready, but I am trying to make a fashionable one right now....

TLWAGG, I am no expert, but I am guessing that germs don't live on plastic as long as, say, an eggplant skin, avocado, orange, etc.  I have probably overstated the fact that I started wearing washable gloves, to the store this week.
Now that they have admitted that the virus has mutated, (they haven't used that word, due to panic, but it has), we don't know how many people have come into the country with the virus.  Blood tests will not determine if the virus is present, and a cotton swab, or taking a forehead temp, sure as heck is not information gathering.  I am never trustful of government reports of statistics. They chose their words carefully today, and the stock market still went south in a hurry.  Notice they wait until the closing bell is very close...

Here's something to think about. Money is very dirty! I keep a small bottle or hand sanitizer in my car for cleaning my hands after handling money during flu season.

I have no idea about the packaged veggies.  I am guessing that the virus would not live as long, but what if the moisture/plastic combination creates a Petri dish type of scenario?  Maybe that is far fetched....
There have been a one in fifty death rate, compared to the two common flu strains of one in like, 800, something like that...
Another thing that is worrisome is the spread to so many countries now.  In Ga. there are so many flight attendants and pilots living here, near the airport.  A good friend of mine flies into Germany, Italy and France every week.  I hate treating her like Typhoid Mary.

Chris Martenson, cell toxicology expert is saying this is like no other virus, pointing out that it is non-symptomatic, stage.  Missing many cases.  Next 14 days will be very critical. We won't know what happened yesterday, for fourteen days.....I am thinking Super Bowl.  Praying for the best, prepared for the worst.  Never can be completely prepared, but constantly stepping it up a notch.  Agree with Cope...

From my friend, Cheryl in Texas, attached is a checklist for pandemic virus (really a general prep checklist and not just for this event.)
Most of us have most of this handled, but it might be a good reference for others around us if you want to use a current event to bring up prepping.

Besides the corona virus, this has been a bad flu season anyway.  One of my co-workers has had the flu this week for the 3rd time in 4 months!
She did not get her flu shot in September before the first round, and the 2nd round was shortly after the first and her flu shot.

I think this is a good chance to identify holes in my preps. The thing I've found I need to work on is additional dried vegetables. I have some but as I made soup last night I found I need a bigger verity of dehydrated vegetables. I want to be able to make all our favorites.

My dehydrated carrot slices, mushrooms, green beans and small sliced tomatoes all held up well for over a year, retaining their flavor.    They may go longer, but I rotate so can not say for sure.  Onion slices do well also.  If you are making soup, using something like chicken, add them late, since you will be cooking slowly for a period of time.  I have a gas stove, but if we have to go a long time, I can cook many good meals in a solar over, smoker or grill.  There is always a way, it is a personal choice as to what works best, when...  Good luck!

As the manufacturing powerhouse to the world, you’ll be challenged to think of ANY industry that won’t experience serious supply chain interruptions and shortages from China’s woes. For instance, did you know China makes the vast majority of our prescription pharmaceuticals?

11  quarantine facilities being set up.  Now we see the need for medical Reserve callup.

"Is this an indication that the threat that this virus poses to our country is far greater than we are being told?
The Department of Defense has released a statement about this new program, and in that statement the 11 military bases were specifically identified…"

JB Pearl Harbor-Hickam, HI (HNL)
Great Lakes Training Center Navy Base, IL (ORD)
Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, TX (DFW)
March ARB, CA (LAX)
Travis AFB, CA (SFO)
Dobbins ARB, GA (ATL)
Fort Hamilton, NY (JFK)
Naval Base Kitsap, WA (SEA)
Joint Base Anacostia, DC (IAD)
Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, NJ (EWR)

I see Dobbins AFB made the list.  Excuse me Dobbins ARB.  Is that Army Reserve Base?
Then it must be Air force Reserve Base....

There is still time to get the masks, apparently. I went to Walmart and got the last 2 boxes of N95 masks, 5 masks per box, $15 per box. I think that is a pretty fair price, and not overly inflated. I think.

I guess I am lucky that I am retired and do not have to go to work....   I have been stocking up every chance I have.  Looks like it will soon be time to lock the gate and stay home for a while.

I read an article that said there was a shortage in Hong Kong of food, TP & condums.  Well at my age I don't have to worry with condoms any more, so I stocked up extra TP.  I have noticed the paper suppliers marketing people are pushing a lot of paper towel & TP sales in the grocery stores lately.

I just placed (yesterday) a solar material order for my friend in NC.  We had planned to install a second solar panel array this Spring.  I had already sent him a charge controller and he has it mounted.  I was concerned about product availability.  I put him on to some solar panels on Craigs list in the Asheville area Friday.  I did not order the panel hold down clamps until I know which panel we will be using because different thicknesses panels take different clamps.  Well end clamps anyway.
I will call him on the phone Monday AM and go from there.  Last time I talked to him he was expecting snow the next day.  I believe N. Ga. got a little bit of it also.

It is disturbing how many medical items were on the list of things that could run short.

More disturbing is this report about the World Economic Forum running an eerily similar drill in October that is now playing out in real life, and the Chinese were monkeying with a virus being developed for a vaccine.

https://www.independentsentinel.com/chinese-coronavirus-outbreak-leads-to-more-questions-than-there-are-answers/ (https://www.independentsentinel.com/chinese-coronavirus-outbreak-leads-to-more-questions-than-there-are-answers/)

Per ThePropagandaReport.com, the pandemic could be used as an excuse to suppress our rights and tightly control the media.

I have been thinking about my original list and what kind of medical equipment you might need. If you have to take care of a family member at home.

Medical equipment: thermometer, thermometer covers, pulse oximeter, stethoscope (as talked about on Wuhan virus has come to the US), maybe BP cuff.

I have all kind of things I've saved from previous illnesses or injures. Any other ideas about which medical equipment should be added to the list? We will need to get it soon or maybe not at all.

Keeping coin and watch batteries from Harbor Freight too.  Paid a few times lately with girlfriends who brought me their watch and especially for one who needed it for her blood sugar meter after she got out of the hospital, and time was of the essence. However you need a chart of the different sizes and voltages of each and what each brand's code for it it is.  It may be LR44 in a famous brand and SR44 in another Japanese brand.  I cannot provide link at this moment, but you can get it on "Giggle" as my husband calls it.
Get hearing aid batteries if a need in your extended famly.

I realized I need watch opening tools for better watches since my husband could not open an OLD Japanese watch.

Depends on one's needs of family needs, but Ihave bedside potty, crutches, quad cane from accident recovery and a bath chair just in case since my shower is not walk in.

Thanks, and the C's (coin) are not different among brands but AG13 is 1 brands code.  If someone asks for or shows you one of similar size, you have to know its equivalents.  I write them on the back of the pack so my Luddite husband does not have to find the printed chart he cannot stand for small print.  It helps "get 'er done" much faster!

Tlwagg, you might want to add to your list and Eppi pot (they come with salt), or camphor  oil (not sure I spelled it right) that can be added to a humidifier near a bed.  There are other essential oils helpful, that can be used such as lavender (I don't care for that fragrance myself). Frankincense . Tea Tree oil is another good one, maybe the best.  Others on here may have better ideas.  Make some 4 thieves, it will take a month to be ready!

I'll add those but I'm allergic to tea tree oil. We have some because my husband used to use it. If anyone is interested I had sinus surgery some years back and had to make a saline solution to wash my sinuses with. I guess it's the same as the bottles of Ocean you can buy OCT. I still use it from time to time. I wonder if this saline has any effect on the virus.
[quote
1. Clean quart jar. I'm sure all or us caners know how to do that. Then fill with bottled water. You do NOT have to boil the water.
2. Add 2-3 heaping teaspoons of pickling or canning salt. Do NOT use table salt because it contains additive.
3. Add 1 rounded teaspoon of baking soda (pure bicarbonate)
4. Store at room temperature and shake or stir before each use.
5. Mix a new batch weekly.[/quote]

I use a Waterpik with a special tip that the doctor gave me. I have also used it to refill the Ocean bottles.

Tea tree hasn't bothered our Doberman, but then, it is a pretty big space, so I guess she can move away from it.  Sometimes, I run it in the bedroom.  She sleeps on a mat outside the bedroom door.  Sheba is 12 1/2, and her flatulence is more than a little annoying.  Actually, it may be able to kill any virus in the room.  She also dreams...chases rabbits and growls in her sleep.  I am a light sleeper.

Star Lady, That is just crazy!  I knew it was going on a few weeks ago, but now!!! Also, why exclude the U.K.?  They have lots of cases.  I have asked every nurse that I know in our area.  No one knows if they have test kits.  They have only been told that no one can get a test, just by asking, but no one has told anyone that I asked, that they have them.  I was very suspicious yesterday and today, when the numbers were not changing from midnight, the day before.  Air strikes just starting, I think it is in retaliation of the bombing...no information, but if you turn on FOX, it will be on next, if you see this.....one more thing....

The UK was exempted because they did shut down or start serious screening long before most EU nations, who just let anyone go anywhere.  I just found out that they agreed to serious passport inspections to exclude EU folks from jumping to the UK and then coming over.

I haven't checked today but Aurora Intel on Twitter said yesterday, it wasn't us that did the strikes....but the jets came thru/over Jordan so, Israel?

Thought we took credit for it yesterday.  The order came from the President.  Unless I came in on the end of an announcement and it was the President of another country.  N.Y. just starting drive by testing.  This well be very telling! They are running six lanes at a time.

As I learned this week and last week with  2 different folks, if any serious wounds or surgery going on, betadine (had that), crutches ( had cane but not enough for my husband's condition and not often found at thrift stores - expensive when bought at drug stores.)  If elderly or infirm, a bath chair if they cannot stand in the shower or only have a tub shower facility.  Could need a portable toilet chair bedside if they cannot walk to the bathroom.

We had the potty, but not the bath chair.  Sometimes Medicare will cover this equipment if medically necessary.

Question for our health professionals:

I read several non-verifiable reports (someone said a friend of a friend, etc.) this morning that we shouldn't take ibuprofen or naproxen sodium or cortisone pain relievers if we get this as they seem to worsen the condition.  Basically, don't take any inflammation fighting drug.....only take paracetamol (we call it acetaminophen,  the ingredient in Tylenol)

Late this afternoon, I see the French Minister of Health is issuing that warning. (Yahoo News)   India is curbing it's export and the UK's Boris Johnson is getting stockpiles of it.  You can see that info with any google search.

Have you heard from reliable people about this?

Because, darn it, I love my Aleve!

Starlady Dr John did a youtube video on this. I'll look for it after dinner. He mentioned the body uses fever to fight infection. So he prefers not to bring down the fever.

I found one report that says the NSAIDS slow down the immune system but there's not much else out there.

Bed side commodes and shower chairs can often be obtained at yard sales for cheap. Not useful at this point, but file it away for the future.
Plus shower chairs make great chairs to use in the garden for older folks as they are working. Sit and bend over to weed/plant and the sturdy back
helps you get up more easily.

I'm told this is an excellent book (also, it's free on kindle) for those of us with some time on our hands in the coming weeks: A Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe (https://www.amazon.com/Journal-Plague-written-citizen-continued-ebook/dp/B0084B57VO).

Here's the wikipedia page on the book (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Journal_of_the_Plague_Year).

Definitely prepper reading, I'll put it in the books section as well.

Thanks, tlwagg,  I watched at 4am (free bandwidth).  His explanations are easy to follow but he's  dry? boring? horrible delivery?  So ,his advice is for an adult is to NOT take a fever reducer, just let it burn itself out.  Radically different.  I wonder if underlying conditions (which, as someone pointed out last week, is just about every adult over 55) come into play.

I have always done this to a certain extent.  My grandmother practiced this method.  She also gave me some kind of onion/honey/whiskey drink as a kid.  It's surprising how many of our grandparents were thinking are now coming full circle.

It sounds like the time-honored technique of bundling up in bed to literally "sweat it out".

I had E-coli once. I stopped sweating in out when I hit 105.6. Man I never want to do that again. The good news is that this virus doesn't give you a really high fever.

New meme from FB that finally made my husband laugh since he is tired of the media and being forced to stay home all week by knee repair surgery instead of his wife.

Duct tape on a toilet paper holder
Caption:  Wash and wax

We have enough for a month to 6 weeks but getting calls from elderly family members who cannot go out and 1 visit from a neighbor who watches me carry in big bags and boxes in my small home.  Sharing and rationing !

Starlady is right! Tylenol is the go to fever reducer for Flu or Corona.
