Building Tribe
« on: July 21, 2020, 02:47:25 PM »

Photo is from our July 11, 2020 meeting

The following is from an email sent out to the Volusia County Prepping group about a new project that we're starting. Perhaps it will work for your own group.

Building Tribe
... in the current Prepper use of the word.

How It Will Work
Starting with our August meeting, we are going to try to match our members up with others who live nearby. Here's how this will work:

At different tables or locations in the meeting room, we will have signs with different areas in and around the county.
During the social time (6:30 - 7:00) you are encouraged to meet at the sign closest to where you live.
We will also split up by location at the beginning of the break so that those who might have come in late can still participate.

It is entirely up to you as to how (or if) you proceed from here. Exchanging contact information would be a logical first step, as well as finding out who lives where. You might want to arrange a picnic lunch at a public park or something similar to get to know each other better.

How close should you be?

It's up to you, of course, but a good rule of thumb might be: Can you communicate by radio without a repeater, or can you walk or ride a bicycle there in an hour or less?

Once your tribe has been established, it can be a great way to bring others in. Think of this as the nucleus to build on rather than the end result. Also keep in mind that getting to know others is a big part of this: trust, compatibility, committment, core values, etc., are very important factors in building tribe.

Working Together
The only role that Volusia County Prepping is going to have in this is just to help make the connections. What you do with it is entirely up to you. Just because you live near another prepper doesn't necessarily mean that you would want to be part of a "tribe" with that person. Getting to know your fellow preppers is a critical part of this. It is quite possible that there will end up being more than one "tribe" within the same area, just based on how people fit together.

As the different "tribes" are being established, we will distribute a communications plan so that we can share information from a wider area. That will be part of our October meeting, which will focus on radio comms. (More on getting the radios programmed in a later email) If you don't already have your ham radio license, do it now. Ham Test On Line has been used and recommended by several folks in the group.

Areas and Established Clusters
There are already a couple of neighborhood clusters in place that are actively building tribe, so we have included them in addition to more general locations.

    Ormond Beach
    Daytona Beach
    New Smyrna Beach
    Port Orange
    DeLeon Springs
    Orange City
    Brevard County
    Flagler County
    Lake County
    Marion County
    Orange County
    Seminole County
    Northwest Volusia
    Spruce Creek

If you would like to have other areas included in this project, please reply to this email with the location so we can add them to the list.

That's how we're doing it. If your local group has any experience with a similar project, I'd sure like to hear about it.

Stephen, is that AA at the table?   Sure looks like him.

I wish we had enough people in all of North Georgia to make a tribe - but it sounds like a great way to get people moving.

It has to be him and it is his neck of the woods

Yes, that's him. He gave a fascinating and very lively program. I videoed the meeting (with his permission, of course), and as soon as I have the time to put it together and upload it, I'll have it on our group's YouTube channel. There will also be a blog post on our site with more information about the program.
