Secure or Encrypted Email Services
« on: July 27, 2015, 06:49:28 PM »
Here's a listing of secure or encrypted email services:

protonmail.ch - Currently a free service (it's in beta mode) with end to end encryption when emailing someone else using the same service.  Based in Switzerland.  There is a waiting list for this service (usually about two weeks).

unseen.is - Subscription service based in Iceland.  Comes with an encrypted chat capability.  Currently about $50 per year.  Uses openPGP encryption.

startmail.com - Subscription service based in Germany.  Has a free 7 day trial; after the trial period, it's $60 per year.  Uses openPGP encryption.

If you are using a Windows Operating System and want to set up encryption capability for an existing email account, you'll want to get a PGP Key.

A good way to do this is to download and install the Thunderbird email client:  https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/
Also, you'll need to download PGP4Win: http://www.gpg4win.org/

Here's a video that will show you how to set it up:

I have been having problems with my ISP (poor/intermittent service)  I have threatened several time that I was going elsewhere.  Not so easy when your email is provided by your ISP.  So I took the plunge and now have a protomail email address.  It's encrypted.
Lilburner if I send you my protomail address by PM can you switch it out with the one I have on record now?

Thunderbird and Gpg4win is the way to go. It's free and has the least likelihood of being tracked by government bureaus. PGP is secure. Setup is not as easy, but once done it easy to use. ALL the other services are at risk of implanting a master key that can be used to decrypt your emails.

The thing about encryption, the person on the other end has know how to decrypt it. The problem is to make it as secure as possible and as easy as possible to use. Those two things don't usually go together. The other issue is that PGP encryption requires a private key that stays on your computer. So if your computer dies and you don't have a copy of the key you have to create a new key. Also, anyone that gets access to your computer can decrypt all your emails and files.

If you really want security, setup PGP on an encrypted volume and any emails should be stored on that drive.

For secure email, I'm running Thunderbird and PGP on Linux, along with VeraCrypt.

ProtonMail supports PGP encrypted email with those that aren't on Protonmail, but you have to trade keys with them first.

I put a blog post up about it

The important thing is to isolate what emails are used for what. One for banking, one for credit cards, one or more for social media, one for online purchases like Amazon, one for family and friends, one for prepper sites, etc. The more separated you are the more difficult it is for companies and government to track you.
