Home Security - Driveway Alert
« on: June 13, 2024, 06:11:13 AM »
Abigayle,  I am thinking about putting one of these with a few sensors up at my BOL.  It should also work well for the last 1.3 mile of your road.  The only problem I see is it would need sunlight to keep the battery charged up.  You probably already have something like this that I did not notice when I visited.

R.W.S., ideas on security, or anything else, is always appreciated.  We tried one of these when we first moved to Southern Mo. in 1998.  There was National forest on three sides of our farm, which had a long tree lined drive, up to the house.  Thor was still back in Iowa for awhile, finishing up there.  Just about every night, I would be pulling the shot gun from under the bed, as the alarm would go off.  We had lots of deer. The trees were pine, but still had some motion when the wind blue.  I am sure they have improved by now.
With the number of deer, turkey and other critters, I am guessing that factor, and blowing trees would have the alarm "calling wolf"  Once I am up and ready, I don't dose off easily.
We have two retired S.W.A.T and one highly trained military living on the only road in here.  The grandkids will be driving in late Friday night.  Everyone will be told.  I would love one of these if they had a built in brain which signals just cars and/or people on foot.  Meanwhile, we have to use plan A.  Thanks for the tip.  If you follow through on it, we would love to know how it goes.  It had 8 reviews, with four stars.  I could not open those.

I have an old home brew here.  Years and years ago HeathKit came out with a motion detector kit.  You had to solder the parts onto a circuit board.  When I was building here 1987 I let it look over my building site & materials.  I tied it to a 2 meter radio and a morse code IDer.  When it activated it keyed the radio and sent a morse code ID.  I lived in town 10 miles away and kept a radio on.  One afternoon about 5PM it went off while I was eating supper.  As I was heading for the door it went off again.  When I got to my building site my contractor that normally leaves at 4PM was just pulling out of the driveway with a couple of my 2x4s on his truck.  It seems there was an automobile accident at the near by intersection and he went up to assist and when finished came back, loaded up a couple of 2x4s and headed home.

I permanently installed it overlooking my driveway and hard wired it to my house.  Yes the deer tripped it when they came up the driveway.  One year around Christmas it was 20Deg F and the wind was blowing 15 MPH at midinght it went off.  I was in bed.  I got up and started to get dressed when it went off a second time.  Now NO deer is going to be out moving around in that kind of weather.  I stepped out the door with a 30 cal carbine and looked down the driveway but did not see anything.  I decided to put a couple rounds down the driveway anyway.  Then decided to pull the fire over into the woods just in case someone was there.  A couple daays later I was walking down the drive to get the mail and noticed broken glass beside the drive.  The writing on the glass said "Objects in this mirror are closer than they appear.  Looking on a tree beside the drive was a fresh skin mark.  I figured someone pulled into my drive at midnight. Stopped when the motion detector turned on the light over the parking area.  When the light time out and went off they started moving leaving and activated the motion detector again.  I believe the were long gone by the time I put a couple rounds down thru the woods.  Anyway they did not come back.

Working on memory here . Dakota murs  system uses to have a driveway/ trail alert system that worked off metal detection not motion . It would no trip on say an unarmed man but one with even a handgun  was enough metal to cause an alert.
