cheap coms 5$ star link
« on: November 12, 2025, 08:44:06 PM »
I looked into star link after the hurricane last year. the dish was 500$ and there was a plan that could be paused so you only pay when you turn it on.
not bad for a back up com plan but you need internet or cell service to turn it on and 500$ is a big pill to swallow.

now the dish is 230 and they have 5$ / month unlimited plan but with slower speed.
if I was single I think I could get away with just this but now it's a more viable back up option to my cell internet

Starlink said mine would arrive in 2 to 4 weeks and I would get an order acknowledgement in 2 days.  I plan to use it as a backup to my Phone Company DSL which is slow and erratic.

Since I am a Starlink user already, they sent me an email.  It said they would send it to me free with a 5.00 per month rental fee.  When I no longer want it I have to send it back.  I finally got notice that it would be here this coming week.  Due to the large demand my shipment was delayed.  I will take it up to the BOL next trip and try it out.  I guess it will travel back and forth when we go.  Mobile internet.  It would also be good to set up at a weekend campout.  I wonder if it can be powered by 12VDC along with its internal battery charged from 120Vac?

I get cell phone service at my BOL thru my Starlink Wi-fi.  I use Wi-fi calling on my phone.  So it will be interesting to see if Wi-fi calling will work thru the portable Starlink.
