Title: Fear, and why I prep.
Post by: crplhood on April 29, 2021, 11:29:58 AM
Hey, All. I pop in a few times a year to write, but mostly I just watch.
I mostly watch, because I know I'll want to vomit stats all over the fear posts I see here regularly.
I call a fear post anything by a political leaning media source trying to weaponize mistruths into fear for action or money.
Mostly, it's money.
Occasionally, I sign in and try to calm some of the misinformation. Last time I did this, one of my friends here texted me and asked why I prep if I'm not worried about any of these things I try to counter.
AKA, why prep if I'm not afraid?

Because I like it.
The process of growing my own food and preserving it is cathartic and rewarding.
Learning repair and creation skills is interesting.
I enjoy firearms.
Not running to the store at 3am when I run out of TP in the bathroom is a huge plus.
I like the community.

But I don't read the far left and far right sensationalist media I find on prepping news sites, or the like. And yes, it's both. Only in the prepping community do you find people who are into healing energy or folk medicine and AR fanatics (I love ARs, though I like the Mini better).

The biggest reason I don't come to events or post much is... we're a gullible community. Preppers live like they need to justify their lifestyles. I known many of you for ten years and met quite a few. Not a one of you seems scared of the future, not because you're ready and prepped, but because I'd say most of you are strong stalwart people.

Maybe this applies to no one, but I know I became a happier person when I stopped feeding trash news, from cable news down to internet shout pieces, into my brain. Looking at history, data, and direction, I think the economy is stable and has a strong buffer, the climate is changing but wont kill us, and unrest/crime are down. The media doesn't want me to think skeptically to arrive at that conclusion because they All want views and clicks.

So I garden and stock and shoot because I want to. It's fun. I like it.

I hope you like it too, and the media isn't dragging you down along the way.
This has been my TED talk. Love y'all.

I agree with most of what you say, I homestead because I've always wanted to be a Pioneer Girl, raise my own food where feasible and live a simpler lifestyle.  In general, I like animals better than I like most people.   Homesteading and the skills that must go with it are living the prepping lifestyle.

I've learned to scroll on by most of the alarmist stuff on both sides.

Independence just feels so much better. I got a call from my financial advisor yesterday. I was in the middle of gardening and had to cut him off. He kind of laughed that I was gardening and asked if I was  getting ready for doomsday. I really need to find another one that gets me. I told him that less trips to the supermarket is always better. Holy crap, vegetable garden only equals doomsday preparation.  ::)

Prepper websites are like any other publication - you have to have new material all the time.  And you can't fund your site through sales of overpriced junk unless you scare people into believing that the end is near.

I have never done so, but I'm sure if one would do a deep dive into the predictions and recommendations of the various big name prepper mags/sites one would find said sites have never had a correct analysis on anything of any import.

But hey, ignore that and buy this new super-prepper-widget.

Until they did...  Btw, I’ve got a lot of the “super prepper-widgets” and I will either be the widget king or when everyone else is eating pine tree bark, I will be “Okay”...  I have home owners insurance, automobile insurance, life insurance and health insurance...  If I lost my job tomorrow, if there was an unexpected bank holiday, if there is an ice storm, if there is a massive power outage, if I just wanted to say “screw it” society sucks!  I’m pretty good for a pretty long time with my “super-prepper-widget”...  Those without it will be just like the guy that totaled his new truck with no insurance.

And your point is just what exactly LFCF???

Sorry I forgot to ask, what “overpriced junk” is this website “hawking”?  Just people sharing information and hoping for the best while preparing for the worst...  When you paint with a broad brush you tend to get paint on all of that egg on your face...  Just sayin...  🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
