Title: Cell phone service
Post by: tlwagg on January 26, 2022, 01:59:00 PM
A while back we had a post about a service that made it possible for people who lived outside normal cell phone coverage range to receive service. Does anyone know what that was?

Not sure what is out there but I work from home and had no service (not doable)…. I bought a cell phone booster which is basically a repeater and it has been “adequate” for my needs.  There has to be a signal outside (even if basically not useable, I switched off my bars and used the signal numbers to determine I was getting something).  Directional antenna aimed toward the nearest tower location and it brings the signal into the house and amplifies it to a usable signal.  Not great but it has enabled me to work from a dead area.

Sounds like a cell booster. They are far more rare in homes not since both Android and iPhone have native call-over-wifi. If you can't do the latter, the large service providers sell the boosters. Prepaid providers generally don't sell them in my experience.

It may be a booster but there is a company who comes out and sets up cell or internet. I know someone who has it but I have to wait until next week to ask.

I can tell you that as of 2 years go, Verizon doesn't do it anymore.   You have to buy and set up your own booster.

All we could do with Verizon, was rent a jet pack.  They start at  30.00 a month, and ours ran out before the month was up.  At this point it runs slower.  We added another five dollars a month.  Since we have unlimited minutes, so they cut the price in half.  You can really boost it with another 50.00 a month, but we did not want to pay that.  We can not stream out here, so it would just be for U-tube type usage.  This house already had a boost of some kind on the outside of the house.  Until Verizon comes down the road further, or A.T.&T. extends theirs.....thats all she wrote.

Has anyone gotten or used Elon Musk's Starlink yet? He offers cell and internet service that operates off satellites. Some models are entirely portable and can be taken into the woods. I haven't had time to look into it further yet, but it's coming up on my list if we don't collapse before then.

Myself and at least one other Region 1 member are on the waiting list for this area.   They seem to be launching to cover lateral "bands".  The northern US was first and results from people up there are great compared to ANY of the existing satellite companies.   My understanding from Starlink's last email is that we should be up in the next 3-4 months, which is about 7-8 months later than they had said when I 1st signed up.

I am on the waiting list also for Starlink.  After testing and after I have a place in Region 2, I will move it up there.  May be easier said than done though.

I just got an email from starlink and confirmed my order.  They will ship this Friday to arrive Tuesday 2-8-22.

I misinterpreted what they said, I guess.  I got a notice from FedEX said they picked up a package for me and it would be here Friday 2-4-22.  Tracing said Carson, Ca.  My assumption is that is my Starlink package.

So, This morning I got busy to prepare a place for the antenna.  Well I have an 80ft Rohn 25G tower attached to the back of my house.  Of course I do, I have been a ham radio operator for almost 50 yrs and I built my own house.   The Starlink antenna needs to be mounted on top of the tower so that it has open horizons.  So this morning I climbed the tower and took down a mast that was sticking out the top of the tower to make room for the Starlink antenna.  I thought I would need to construct an adapter to be able to mount the antenna to the top flat plate on my tower.  I have a spare 40ft Rohn 25 out in the woods so I put the bed extender on my truck and drove out to retrieve the top section to use as a pattern.  I removed the existing pipe mount and prepared to go to town to get some flat bar to make an adapter.  By this time the wife is putting lunch on the table.  After lunch I watched a couple of Youtube videos about installing the Starlink system because I did not want to go to the welding shop during the lunch hour and disturb their lunch hour.  Good thing.  Seems Starlink has several ways to mount the antenna.  One being a pipe mount.  So I put the truck back under the shelter to gather some more dust and will wait to see what I have to work with first.

Good Luck if it’s coming through FedEx out of Macon!  Those Bozo’s couldn’t find an ugly woman at a democratic fundraiser!😳🤔🤦‍♂️!  Sorry I shouldn’t give them too much grief, the have gotten 3 out of 10 deliveries correct!  If they were a baseball player that would be a Hall of Fame career!😎

It has been raining today and I have stayed in for the most part.  I watched several youtube videos about Starlink.  It appears I will be getting Generation 2 (Gen2) which has a rectangular antenna instead of a round one.  Anyway the linked video will explain it better than I can.

And I figured out how I can run VOIP thru the WIFI and internet to get cell phone service.  So it looks like I will have a BOL offgrid with internet service and VOIP.   Now to work on getting the WIFI from the barn up the hill 125 ft to the future cabin.  It (the WIFI) might be strong enough to get there on it's own, but we will see.  I will have a plan B just in case.

I decided not to use the base that came with my starlink antenna.  Instead I will re-mount the TB3 Rohn thrust bearing on top of my tower.  Then I will use a 20 inch piece of 1-1/2" PVC sch40 pipe to slip over the antenna mast.  The wire will run inside the pipe down to where the pipe is clamped into the existing rotator. (my bsae mount)  The bearing will clamp down on the pipe to add additional support.
So I went up the tower today after lunch and mounted the TB3.  While up there I took pictures so you could see what the horizon looks like from the top of the 88 ft. tower. Pic 1 South view & a rare view of the top of my shop.  Shop has 2 strings of 10ea 235Watt solar panels tied into a PVP4800 string inverter (grid tied).  Pic 2 West view.  Pic 3 North view, as you can see a perfect location to track satellites across the sky.  Pic 4 Mounted TB3.  The reason for the old rotator and TB3 thrust bearing is I used to have an HF tri-band beam up there, but no longer.

88 feet is not high enough to BASE jump is it?😳…. You could bungee!!!  Just make sure and not use the 100 foot bungee!!!

Seriously though, I get dizzy on the edge of my porch, you are a tough man than me sir!!!  Good luck with your system.😎

That is why they are about a year behind.  They lost a complete launch with a rocket expolsion during take off earlier.  I think each rocket holds 60 satellites.   I had mine on order over 9 months.  Now I am waiting on the longer cable to arrive as the 75 ft. cable that came with it is not long enough.

This morning I went up the tower again.  I say again because I stated up yesterday and when I got up over the house the wind hit me.  I looked out and saw the trees leaning over and came back down saying there will be another day.  I went up with the Starlink antenna base on my back like a back pack.  I had bought 4 bolts and four locking nuts.  Big mistake.  I should have bought 5 locking nuts.  You always buy one to drop.  The result is I have 3 bolts holding the antenna base to the tower which will be more than plenty.

R.W.S.  These pictures made me tighten my cheeks.  I am not afraid of heights, but I do have to ask......ARE YOU NUTS?????  This erases any thoughts I had for this system.  I think I could break falling off a step.  This would be out of the question. ;D

Abigayle, there are people who tested the system last year just by setting it on its little stand in their yard.   Much depends on your sky clearance to the satellites.

Yes I am crazy.  Just ask any of my neighbors.  You really do not need as good an antenna location as I have to do well with Starlink, but it helps.  I have been a ham for 40 years and have been up and down many towers.  I no longer climb for others.  When asked to climb a tower by a forty year old, this 75 year old asks them if they are crazy....

My 150ft starlink cable came yesterday.  Dis I run up the tower and install it?  NO.  There was a 15 mile per hour wind here with gusts above that.  I decided to wait until another day.  Today was that day.  My antenna is up and I am now working the internet on starlink.  Now all I need to do is get a tower up at my region 2 BOL and move the starlink.  I have DSL here for what it is worth.

I have been reducing the size of my pictures so they would upload with out timing out.  I won't need to do that with starlink.  This uploaded quick.

The Starlink we are currently using sits in the yard and work great.

It is like I got a new faster computer.  I will move this system to Region2 as there is no cell service or internet.  I have DSL here, which is not that great by it gets me by.

There’s no internet where we live. We had Hughesnet. Slow and expensive. I hope starlink puts Hughesnet out of business. They lie to people saying they can provide high speed ANYWHERE. We never got good speed. Hughesnet said it was our location and wouldn’t do anything. It was a joyful day when I boxed up their equipment and sent it back.

The starlink is INCREDIBLE!

Yes,  They raised prices a couple weeks ago.  Said is was because of inflation!
