You can use the same tricks to build it into 2x4's.  If you have a basement with exposed 2x4's, consider building a drawer into one and nailing it next to another exposed 2x4.  When it comes to inside the house hides there are so many, it could be its own topic.

This is an okay idea, but if you plan on using them inside the house in a fireplace, I would suggest staying away from treated wood.  If your outside or use a sealed stove then it would be okay to use treated lumber sawdust.
