The founder of the Elijay Telephone Company was a ham radio operator. Makes sense. He has long passed, but while alive he started a picnic for ham radio operators. The first Saturday in October each year is reserved for the picnic before the sign up list is posted so employees can reserve dates on the annual calendar. The Telephone Company Pavillion is on Legion Rd off Old Hwy 5 S. and next to the Georgia Power Yard. The Georgia Cracker Radio Club uses this picnic to gather and to make an annual apple run as that weekend apples are in prime season. The picnic is open to non member hams also, so we invite any local hams to bring a covered dish and join us for lunch. This would be a great opportunity to meet others you hear on 3.995Khz each morning about 7:00 AM and buy some apples to take home. I say about 7 because propagation has been so poor lately that it is 7:30 before the band opens up.
