RWS, The dairy farms around here gather the cow manure from the milking barns and compost it in giant tubes of plastic. Then the next year they spread it on their fields before planting feed, mostly corn. When the grain is harvested they sell some but keep some. They then collect the silage (mostly corn and wheat stalks) and grind them up and mix the silage with some of the grains to make the next years feed for the milk cows.
To make a little extra money the farmers leave a tiny bit of corn standing. This attracts doves. The farmers then sometimes rent their fallow fields to the DNR for state sponsored dove hunting.
