General Prepping Discussion / Re: 2024 Spring Camp out
« Last post by Searchboss on May 05, 2024, 09:18:34 PM »
We had a great 2024 Spring Campout! I will admit that this is the smallest turnout I have ever seen at a semiannual SEPN campout, but those who participated had a great weekend. We only ended up with three campsites and a total of five campers. There were several regulars at the campouts who had posted that they planned on coming but had something come up and had to back out at the last minute. We all know that life happens! They were missed, and of course, talked about. ;D

The weather cooperated for the most part with only a short shower on Friday afternoon. Otherwise, the temperatures were not bad for springtime in Georgia. We did have to put up with the sound of the cicadas during the day, but they were quiet at night.

Those of us who attended got the wonderful opportunity to sit and socialize for most of the weekend and find out what others have been doing. It was really enjoyable to be around good friends and great people, not to mention educational. We have some very knowledgeable people in this group!

The biggest (literally) surprise was when Lilburner showed up on Friday and visited with us throughout the weekend. It has been a while since I have seen or heard from him, and it was great to have him at the campout. Hopefully, he will make a post from time to time to keep us apprised of what he is up to. I will leave it up to him to post what he has been doing, but I will provide a hint. He brought a huge selection of homemade freeze-dried candies and fruit that he shared with everyone. At his insistence, we all took home quite the bounty. It was a real treat for everyone! Here is a partial list provided by the sweet tooth in my family: skittles, strawberry cheesecake, snickers, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter M&M’s, oreo cookie ice-cream, banana taffy, blueberries, raspberry taffy, ice cream sandwiches, strawberries. Not shown in the picture due to consumption:  :P peeps, circus peanuts, cinnamon taffy, and blackberries. Yummy!

In addition to his great fellowship, RWS brought several trays of Ramps, Marsh Mallow plants, and oregano, plus homegrown blueberries, and lettuce to share with fellow campers. The fresh blueberries were a real hit!

I would like to thank Farside for his efforts to schedule the campout and provide the portable toilet at the campsite. He came out to visit with us on Saturday and we were able to get caught up with his activities since the last campout.

I think we need to start a discussion about revitalizing future in-person activities for SEPN. I would like to see us get back to meeting a few times each year like we did in the past, if people are interested. Besides the two semi-annual campouts, I always enjoyed the Summer get-togethers, the fall Christmas Pot luck gatherings, etc. They were great opportunities to get together face-to-face with others in the area and catch up on what everyone has been doing. The raffles and door prizes were a lot of fun. Since not everyone wants to camp, this provides the opportunity to meet, eat, and greet others who may not be interested in camping but are active in other aspects of prepping. What do you think?

To summarize, we had a very small turnout, but a great time at the 2024 Spring Campout! Hopefully, we will have a much larger participation for the Fall Campout.

See you there!

Georgia / SEPN Georgia Region 6 Meeting for May 2024
« Last post by VoodooMD on May 04, 2024, 05:33:01 AM »
Hello to all SEPN Georgia Members and Georgia Region 6 Members!

Hello ALL!!—Hope that all are doing well and getting prepared for a “very interesting” --and HOT summertime. Please remember to
 stay well hydrated!

We here in Region 6 got our April 2024 monthly meeting off on the right foot with our presentation:

THINK GRID DOWN: Portable Generators 101: Safe set-up / Use / Maintenance and Long term storage

We brought our family’s portable dual fuel generator to get the class subject started and other members brought theirs as well. We all were able to get a very good “look-see” of the different models based on individual needs for families--And it really helped that USS had a good stock of different varieties of portable generators as well!😊

This meeting was very well-attended and audience participation was OUTSTANDING!!

As I have said in past postings and at numerous past meetings --It’s not me--it's YOU ALL who make it all happen for ALL of us!!

As I have mentioned in past posts--we as so very BLESSED to have such GREAT members here in the SEPN Georgia Region 6 area—ALL of which who are a “wealth of knowledge” and “true experts”! THANKS SO VERY MUCH!!

We also have been TRULY BLESSED to have such a wonderful place at “Uncle Sam’s Surplus” to hold our monthly SEPN Region 6 meetings in the past --and for 2024 and beyond! The folks at USS have always provided EXCELLENT SUPPORT in the past to our
SEPN Georgia Region 6 meetings and to all of us Region 6 members --and have ALWAYS assisted us in any and all of our “meeting needs” for equipment or class presentation items for our use! They are absolutely # 1 in customer service!!

Thanks again so much to Alex, Shelby and Nick, and all the USS crew for your continued support to us for our monthly meetings in the past --and going forward!

I would like to take the time now to personally THANK-YOU ALL who came and supported us with your attendance and participation with our past monthly meetings and looking forward to meeting, learning, and participating with you all for the remainder of 2024 --and beyond! Our numbers are growing—and its showing!! 😊

We both feel GREATLY blessed to know each and every one of you and greatly appreciate your willingness to share needed knowledge, experiences, and advice! May God Bless You All!

The meeting for May is scheduled for the 4th Saturday of the month—and the May meet happens to fall on the Saturday of Memorial Day Week-End.

With that being said—and since I know that lots of folks most likely have a “very good chance" of having made other plans for this particular weekend---I have decided to cancel the SEPN Georgia Region 6 meeting for May and pick it back up again in June. Keep an eye out on this thread for our June topic announcement!

Please all be safe in all your travels and remember--Memorial Day is a very special time that we honor all of our fallen military veterans who made the supreme sacrifice to help ensure that we are able to enjoy the freedoms we have as Americans today!!

Take care all and God Bless! ---See you all there at the meeting in June!

 And Keep On PREPPING!!!

 Rhett/Voodoo MD

Well it is time for a rain.  That is because I have gotten my garden all watered up so I could go camping for a few days.  Looks like I will start digging up potatoes when I get back.  When I watered the potatoes I noticed the ground all pushed up and big cracks in the dirt.  Looking down in the cracks I could see red potatoes.  So with a little water and a few more days they will be ready.

My lettuce is starting to bolt due to the heat so I cut off as much as will fit in my camper frig crisper.  So anyone coming to the campout that could use a little leaf lettuce to spruce up a salad or put on a sandwich, just holler at me.  Been real busy today.  We picked early blueberries, strawberries and English peas.  The peas are already blanched and bagged.  We came up with 6 more packs for the freezer.
See you at the campout.

Medical/First Aid/Health / Certain Teas May Inactivate COVID-19 Virus, Lab Study Finds
« Last post by RWS on April 28, 2024, 07:10:42 AM »
Researchers studied 24 commercially available teas and identified five that significantly reduced SARS-CoV-2 levels in saliva. These were raspberry zinger, eucalyptus mint, mint medley, green tea, and black tea.
The findings, published in Food and Environmental Virology, showed that all five tea varieties reduced the virus by at least 96 percent within just 10 seconds when used in the mouth and throat. When gargled, the teas were even more effective, eliminating 99.9 percent of the virus in the same timeframe.
Black tea proved the most potent. This matters because COVID-19 primarily infects and replicates in the oral cavity before spreading to the lungs, according to the study authors.

Study Adds to Growing Body of Research on COVID-Killing Potential of Oral Rinses

Only 1 day left to bid.  Surprisingly very few people are bidding on the body armor?  They have a number to choose from starting on page 6.  I looked up a few of their offerings and they seem to be high quality products…

Homesteading / Re: Where To find tall poles to hold chicken netting overhead.?
« Last post by Abigayle on April 25, 2024, 09:56:44 AM »
Thor managed to find some tall, 3" straight trees in the woods.  We needed to thin anyway and plan to open up some.  Along with the two umbrella stands, we now have the chicken area covered with the netting.
Last night, there were coyotes down in the fields below our 3000 ft high home.  I have never heard that many.  The cows must be calving.  Some lead needed to be wasted to keep them off the mountain.  That was actually at four this morning, in a full moon.    Wonder who was doing all the shooting?  It was 47 degrees.
